Rapid urbanisation, industrialisation and use of motorised vehicles have caused considerable air and noise pollution and energy consumption in India, with far reaching adverse effects on the climate of the country.

The use of technology plays an important role in obtaining sustainability in transport and, thereby, reducing the carbon footprint of travelling. There is immense potential in the applications of sustainable transport technology solutions, to reduce toxic emissions, save energy, and diminish space requirements and its subsequent urban sprawl.

Sustainability in transport can be achieved by various means, including the use of technology to alleviate pollution, decrease dependency on fossil fuels and promote a healthy lifestyle.

Technology can be used for reduction in transport emissions, and improvements in road safety, public transportation and freight infrastructures. Engineering, education and enforcement (EEE) are needed to curb fatalities, improve road safety and increase pedestrian and bicycle safety. EBTC’s efforts in the transport sector have been focused on railways, electric vehicles, ports/logistics, Intelligent Transport Systems and alternative fuels.
